Good morning to everyone except Republican in GA who are trying to not only make our system of elections even more vulnerable with expensive ass machines that cannot be audited and are a hack risk but are trying to further compound voter suppression by #GAHB316 #gapol
No this bill isn’t a real “bipartisan” effort. It is a hodgepodge if some good stuff from four Dem bills currently filed. #GAHB316 continues to ignore well documented issues with “exact match” including the fact that the SSA HAVV database has a high error rate of “no match”
Since Jan 2011, 39% of GA voter registration forms have been returned as “no match”. The SSA Inspector General issued a report in 2009 stating that this system was problematic for the reasons stated above for voter registration purposes. #GAHB316
#GAHB316 does nothing to address the systemic closure of polling locations and precincts which disproportionately effects marginalized communities. Randolph county was only the one we knew about.
But the author of #GAHB316 doesn’t actually care about preventing or protecting against voter suppression as he’s the brainiac who pushed “exact match” to be codified into state law. It’s no surprise he would include it in this bill without fixing numerous litigated issues
Many people have drilled down on the issues with the voting system and the reluctance of Georgia Republicans to allow the state to go to a gold standard system of elections that would use hand marked paper ballots. They want your vote electronic and maybe even a QR code.
Watching Rep Fleming claim there was a battle of experts in regards to cyber security risks to voting systems, it was funny then quickly painful as he insisted on grilling the concerns of 24 cyber security experts including people from Georgia tech
But Fleming was insistent that the “expert” testimony of an election official from Rockdale County who told a story about a Nov 2016 election in which 1,000 people voted was comparable on the matter of cyber security. She’s not a cyber security expert.
I don’t know if others in the audience were confused as to why she was allowed to give testimony for 30 minutes or longer before stating she was a member of the SAFE Commission which rubber stamped the Republican plan and disregarded experts on the voting system but it’s clear
Hubris and lack of concern for having verifiable elections is driving this process. They do not care about voters they just want to continue false positioning as champions.
During #GAHB316 hearing yesterday a committee member used increased registration and participation rates of AA and Latinos as “proof” that exact match wasn’t that big of a problem. This is how they twist and distort logic.
As we all know that huge increase is due to organizers grinding hard to make sure people are not left out of the process. If we had a system that was not so heavily rigged against us our numbers would be even greater. They are trying to delay the inevitable. It won’t work.
I share all of this to ask folks plz spread the word. If you were worked up over our Nov election and voter suppression, please pay attention and support GA folks working around this issue year round. There is no off cycle this is a constant battle. #GAHB316 #VoterSuppression
We shouldn’t have to search for and chase down provisional ballots. The state should have a vested interest in seeing that its citizens can access the ballot and that every vote is counted. This is a 24/7/365 issue. #gapol #VoterSuppression #VotingRights
