If I were a Democratic candidate for president, here is how I would answer the “socialism” charge. “I am not a socialist. But I support Social Sexurity and Medicare, which Republicans called socialism when they were enacted. 1/
“I support the interstate highway system, which many conservative Republicans denounced at the time as socialism. I avoided polio thanks to a free vaccine in elementary school, which a Republican Cabinet officer at the time called ‘socialized medicine.” 2/
“So if you join me in support for Medicare, Social Security, the highway system and protection against polio, then by the conservative Republican standard, I guess we are all socialists.” Har tip to @KevinMKruse
