There is a camp on the edge of an Air Force base in south Florida where they take migrant children. They stack them in bunks inside barracks and tents. The boys are dressed in a few different colors. The girls are mostly in pink.
They all play soccer sometimes. Most of the time it is boys who are on the soccer fields. In a far corner, there are trailers set up, bathroom trailers, maybe with showers.
The blue-shirted Comprehensive Health Services guards stand at the door of the trailers, while the girls stand in long lines waiting to get in, one at a time. They are in the hot sun. The sun is very hot in south Florida. There are no trees inside. It is bare.
When the children move from one place to another they are in single file. They move between metal police barriers, to keep them in lines. All of the guards wear caps and hats. The children don’t seem to. .
Lg SYSCO trucks carry food in the morning. Large fuel trucks feed generators each day. Mosquito control vans visit. Novelty food trucks show up so EEs can buy lunch. But many of guards & workers bring their own lunches. They carry them in clear plastic shoulder bags or packs.
Those entering camp show their IDs to guards at gates. When they leave they have to show them, too. They wear their IDs on lanyards around their necks. From a distance, kods also seem to have something around their necks, but it isn’t clear.
I have heard that the children may have some sort of electronic tracking devices on them.
The guards try very hard to keep us from seeing the children. When we do see them, they see us, and they often wave and call out to us. They jump, so they can see us over the fence.
The guards threaten us with arrest.
We are outside a concentration camp for children from Central America. At 4:30, speakers in the camp play a scratchy recording of Retreat, followed by the Star Spangled Banner. The children file back into their overcrowded quarters
