/Can we talk for just a moment about this idea that goes around EVERY TIME we have this debate? You know, the one where people say, "just because I disagree with you doesn't mean I hate you"? #GC2019
/I preached this morning on the gospel lectionary: the sermon on the plain from Luke. The one where Jesus says "Love your enemies". I'm sure the a lot of us not at #GC2019 did. You all know as well as I do that Jesus didn't mean "a warm feeling" when he said "love".
/When Jesus talked about loving someone, he meant doing active good to them. The "feelings" you have about them are secondary to the actions you take. You don't love a hungry person by feeling pleasant towards them. You love a hungry person by feeding them. #GC2019
/Well, the same basic premise is behind the concept of "hate". Hatred doesn't necessarily mean you FEEL badly toward someone. Hatred means taking actions that hurt them. #GC2019
/LGBTQI+ folks are telling us, again and again, that what we're doing to them is actively hurting them. That the Church's stance is contributing to all kinds of damage; from self-harm to hate crimes. #GC2019
/And yet, we continue to actively do the things that lead that harm. Maybe we don't FEEL any malice towards them. Maybe we hold them in warm regard. But it's still hatred, because we are DOING to them. #GC2019
/When someone tells you that you are hurting them, and you don't stop doing it, it's hatred. The actions are hateful. It doesn't matter why you're doing it or how you feel about it. #GC2019
/Yes, you can disagree about some things and it not be hatred. But, when that disagreement leads you to take actions that damage someone else, it's absolutely hatred. #GC2019
