A woman losing her child is yet another another horrific example of DHS’s inability to treat migrants w/the dignity & respect they deserve.

Pregnant migrant women should not be locked up. Keeping them in jail is a Trump admin policy.

It's inhumane & we can't let it stand.
Some Qs for @CBP & @ICEgov:

- Why was she cleared for release on 2/21 yet not released,& instead transferred to ICE?
- Why is stillborn death not considered an in-custody death?
- Has mom been released?
- What kind of medical care is available for pregnant women in DHS custody?
@CBP @ICEgov We've still heard nothing from @CBP and @ICEgov on this. Are they still holding the mom?

These hearings are a good first step. We applaud the efforts of @RepZoeLofgren, @davidcicilline, @RepJayapal and others to hold the Trump administration accountable for enacting this cruel and reckless policy. But today’s hearing are not enough.

Keeping families together is not an excuse for detention. Let’s be very clear. Immigration detention is a cruel and unnecessary practice. Innocent children should never be used as a propaganda tool.
Zero Tolerance was used as a terror tactic to keep out asylum seeking families. The youngest victims of this policy were infants, some just a few months old. DHS and the Trump administration are hiding behind the rhetoric of national security.
These families come here fleeing persecution. They are met with razor wire and heavily armed CBP officials. Children are not a threat to our borders. The US government is attempting to dehumanize and criminalize these families. #FamilySeparation

One of our attorneys, Kat Russell, is sitting in a car park outside the Pearsall Detention center waiting for Sara.

Sara is a 21 y/old indigenous Keqchi woman from Guatemala & is about to be released after 9 months.

Tomorrow she will be reunited w/her 5 y/old daughter, Alida.
Alida was released to her dad in Houston in early June but because Alida went to live with her dad, Sara lost all of the protections of the "Ms. L" lawsuit.

It meant that she was not eligible to be reunified with her daughter or even to get a new credible fear interview.
Before making the long journey to the U.S. border, Sara was brutally attacked in Guatemala on account of being an indigenous woman, and Alida witnessed much of the violence against her mom.

For the last 24 hours I've been texting & calling with refugees in Libya. 500 are apparently stuck in a Tripoli prison w/o food & water after heavy fighting broke out two days ago. They say their guards ran away, leaving them alone.
These refugees are men, women & children. They tried to cross the Mediterranean earlier this year, but were found by Italian boats, who turned them over to the EU-backed Libyan coastguard, who put them in prison. The conditions were already terrible before the fighting started.
Oh the phone earlier I could hear children crying & what sounded like bombing in the distance. The refugees say everyone's incredibly frightened. "We hear machine guns, tanks, big bombs, last night from the roof it was all fire."
