The question no one could answer on Capitol Hill today: Why can't Congress just pass the final 9/11 bill to ease the pain of 9/11 responders and victims? nydailynews.com/news/politics/…
Jon Stewart was "baffled," too, but pointed to a culprit: "Mitch McConnell has made this a problem. Only him. And I put the blame and the onus on him because he could fix it tomorrow... this would be done. And none of these people would have to be here."
Jon Stewart is gone today, but there are still dozens of responders on Capitol Hill, like Rob Serra. His first day as a firefighter was 9/11. He was 21. He's in a wheelchair now. He's covered, but wants all the people getting sick now to have the same.
Richard Roeill answered 9/11 as a volunteer firefighter after he saw the planes hit. One of his lungs is collapsed. He's visiting congressional offices carrying his oxygen with him. They cluster his visits so he can make them.
Anne Marie Principe beat brain cancer in 2005. She still has trouble breathing, and she's fighting breast cancer. She became an advocate after the military zone around Ground Zero sealed off her business.
Tresa Roth's husband was on the FBI's Evidence Response Team that dug through the Pentagon. He died of cancer in 2008, but it was only a few years ago that the government ruled his death line-of-duty. The delay means Roth gets half what others did.
Retired Det. Lou Alvarez finished his 63rd round of chemo before coming to DC. He has his pension and payout. He has to sit out some of the office visits because of exhaustion. He came for others. "This is money that they need for their families."
There are so many more. These people are why Jon Stewart came to DC yesterday. As much as we in the press focus on the celebrity, they are ones who are still walking the halls, telling their stories, and trying to get Congress to move, yet again. None of them hesitated to move.
