I sort of gestured at this in my column on the Château, but the salient feature of these railroad hotels is that no one will even spend the money to build like that if someone could (and good luck with that).
This kind of gives those hotels the status of natural features, not architecture. They might as well have been put there by God. If you think you’re having some “conversation” of equals with the original builder, you should screw off
You wouldn’t build in the Monument Valley or on the slopes of Mt. Fuji thinking “Time for the 21st century to have its say here!” And if you did, you should maybe provide a design not quite so idiotically, reflexively 20th-century.
