Some reflections on the supposed slashing of tariffs come Brexit day, the economy and democracy (thread)
Brexit is now less than 24 days away. Nobody knows what Brexit that will be. But no deal is a strong contender. What policies will be implemented on that day?
Quit possibly a huge tariff cut. I say quite possibly, because all we have is leaks. No UK manufacturer can currently say what its position vis-a-vis Chinese competition will be 30 days down the road.
Who was consulted for this policy change? What is the role of parliament in this?

And if you do not have answers to these questions: how can that be, for a potentially life-changing decision for potentially many to be potentially implemented potentially 30 days from now?
When the EU was in charge of this area, we were sceptical of overreach, we put in place control mechanisms. Parliamentary scrutiny of EU actions was put in place, even though the government was involved in decision-making. And we felt those mechanisms weren’t sufficient.
What are the mechanisms we feel are necessary now? What scrutiny for this policy change? Or are we happy with wide executive discretion?
And yes, the actual change might end up being not as significant as the announcement makes it sound, as @DmitryOpines rightly points out. But the fact that noone knows should have us all worried.
