This is the message of my book, Why They Can't Write. We don't need any major innovation in how we teach writing. We need to remove the structural barriers that keep teachers from teaching, and use approaches which privilege intrinsic motivation.
As I say in the book, doing what needs to be done to help students learn to write isn't necessarily easy, but it is straightforward.
The first half of Why They Can't Write is about the systemic barriers that stand in the way of students experiencing writing in a way that will lead to learning and growth. Only half the book is pedagogy, and TBH, it's not the most important half.
And yet all the philanthropic money in education is going into initiatives that either barely address or exacerbate the systemic barriers standing the way of learning.
