Turnitin is worth $1.75 billion and is about to be sold. As @Jessifer points out, none of that will be returned to the students whose data has been monetized. edsurge.com/news/2019-03-0…
Unsurprisingly, @Jessifer also nails the crux of the matter. Turnitin simply isn't necessary. They've played a huge role in building the cheating industrial complex, and now they're profiting.
A few years ago I calculated that I could make 10x more working inside the cheating industrial complex than I could teaching college. Turnitin isn't policing that phenomenon, it's fueling it. insidehighered.com/blogs/just-vis…
Turnitin fuels the cheating industrial complex by creating tools of automation which incentivize separation between students and instructors, which advance a narrative of distrust between students and instructors and turn the production of writing into a "game" to be defeated.
I've not had a plagiarism case in more than 10yrs. I prioritized trusting students and creating writing experiences rooted in intrinsic motivation, any incentive to cheat disappears. Students who may be tempted because of grade pressures ask for help before doing something dumb.
We could make Turnitin effectively worthless by resourcing the teaching of writing in the ways we know to be consistent with effective instruction. Turnitin's $1.75 billion valuation is a testament to the failures of applying a market economy mentality to education.
