I’d add that it shows the folly of adopting a negotiating strategy without first securing the consensus you need to get it through Parliament.
It was evident from June 2017 that the PM could not build that consensus on just the Conservative Party + DUP, given the divisions in the Conservative Party and the (for her) disastrous election result. All you needed to do was to count.
The only rational explanation for her conduct is that she has consistently prioritised keeping her party formally together from week to week over building an effective and deliverable U.K. negotiating position with the EU. Party before country every single time.
Nor does it appear that she has the leadership skills, willingness to listen to concerns and new ideas from all sides and to compromise, that were necessary successfully to lead the most important and complex negotiations the U.K. has faced since 1972. Secrecy has won every time.
The disaster she has now suffered was an entirely foreseeable - indeed inevitable - consequence of her approach.
History will not be kind: the only question is whether she appears above or below Lord North and Neville Chamberlain in the list of most disastrous and incompetent PMs. Certainly below Eden.
