1. We will little remember whether Paul Manafort got 6 or 8 or 10 years in prison. But we should long remember the following statements of Judge Amy Berman Jackson: “The ‘no collusion’ mantra is a non sequitur & it’s not factual because (Mueller’s) investigation is not complete.”
2. Manafort’s “dissembling in this case began at the bond hearing & it never abated.” Manafort shows “ongoing contempt for & right to manipulate these proceedings suggesting the rules & laws don’t apply to him.” He “dissembled at every turn to enrich himself & frustrate justice.”
3. “Your illegal lobbying/lying to Congress and the American public undermines political discourse and infects our policy making.” Manafort “agreed with Kilimnik to violate the law and corruptly influence a witness in a criminal proceeding - THIS ONE!”
4. “Court is one of the places where facts still matter.” Contrary to Judge Ellis’s “otherwise blameless life” refrain, Judge Jackson said, “it’s hard to overstate the # of lies, the amount of fraud and the amount of money involved” in Manafort’s wrongdoing . . .
5. Just a few notes I took during today’s hearing. They may not be word-for-word, but they’re close. Judge Jackson’s lengthy remarks were inspirational. I urge folks to read the transcript as it will give you a comfort level that our judiciary still cares about the rule of law.
