when Lefty organizers plan this kind of a stunt, they start with a calendar and work backwards, figuring out for how long they can keep escalating punches until they run out of resources or material; the idea is to make it feel as if this will go on forever unless you comply
reality: it will not go on forever, but it sure doesn't feel like that

and as they make you react to something, then react to something else, then react to something else, hey guess what now they're herding you
the thing about these tactics being used against more prominent and connected figures is that at some point prominent and connected figures will start experimenting with new means to fight it

Okay, so I have had an epiphany about what is going on with Brooks Kubik's series of weightlifter novels

(For new people who missed the previous posts: Brooks Kubik is an attorney and weightlifter obsessed with old-time lifters. He is writing basically York Barbell Club fanfic.)
The pitch that makes the series sound cool: it's basically WINDS OF WAR except the main characters are legendary weightlifters in the York Barbell Club

Alas: Brooks Kubik is not capable of writing the book(s) that he sees in his head.
What Brooks Kubik wants to write: WINDS OF WAR but everybody is a weightlifter

What Brooks Kubik actually writes: "LET ME INFODUMP ABOUT THIS HISTORICAL WEIGHTLIFTING MEET"

Background movie double feature today: slices of struggling lower-class life with THE FLORIDA PROJECT and NEVER GOIN' BACK
THE FLORIDA PROJECT is a great as everyone says; where every character in co-writer/director Sean Baker's previous project TANGERINE was an absolute asshole, here he pulls back to show people desperately hanging on to the edge rather than people who've toppled over it.
Willem Dafoe is the manager of a motel where most of his guests are barely staying clear of residency laws, Bria Vinaite is a single mom with a belfry full of issues, and Brooklynn Prince is her mischevious daughter building a normal childhood in a dysfunctional environment.

PRODUCER. "What's your pitch?"
ME. "Remember SPACE COWBOYS?"

ME. "CIA has to overthrow a Leftist government in Latin America and needs deniable experts so they drag all their old guys from the Contra days out of mothballs & tell them 'just go hog wild'"
the gimmick is that the deniable old covert action guys get all geared up and get down there

and then they discover the hotshot legend retired CIA agent in charge

Important information for anyone concerned about mental health, agriculture, & the so-called "farmer suicide crisis."

Yeah there's a crisis alright. But it's not a farmer thing. It's a rural white thing, period.
There are a lot of fucked-up things about conservative white culture that have *always* been there.

It's just that now it's harder to make a living, so the cracks are finally starting to show.
I've lost family to drugs & suicide.

At least, that's the official story. It's a lot easier to explain suicide with "drugs" than talk about the shittiness of conservative white communities that drive people to self-medicate with drugs in the first place.

God said “Go forth & multiply” not until the Earth becomes toxic & kills you. Greenhouse gasses like carbon dioxide & methane are plant food; Commercial greenhouses raise temperature, moisture & carbon dioxide to facilitate plant growth for a reason.
Any warming by such gasses increases evaporation; Water vapor being lighter than air, rises to the saturation level forming clouds which reflect sunlight, inhibiting heat production. Simple eh?

So, this is interesting to me.

Not answering a yes or no question with yes or no is one of the things that unites both habitual liars and novice ones.
Trump is a habitual liar, of course, but with special features. As I've often noted, he holds the actual factual truth in no regard. The truth is whatever is useful at the moment. He doesn't always resort to any obfuscation, he will just flat out make a concrete statement.
The novice liar replies to an accusatory yes/no question with something like, "How could you even think that of me?" because focusing on their feelings (where they are the wronged, not the wrong-doer) is easier than deliberately lying. It's *true* that it hurts to be accused!

1/ Thread about policy conversations, and why they often aren't policy conversations:

People often advocate for outcomes rather than the actual specifics of policy or institutions.
2/ AKA: We need to have 'universal healthcare'. We need to end poverty. We need to secure the borders. Etc.

These are not policies. These are outcomes. They are not the same thing.
3/ Too often an unsophisticated conversation will have an assumption: I can have [outcome] because I named my group '[outcome group]' and the proposed policy is called '[outcome act]', and because I care a LOT about [outcome].
