seriously imagine how *happy* the dudes at the CIA were when somebody told them there was a Leftist government in Latin America to be overthrown

PRODUCER. "What's your pitch?"
ME. "Remember SPACE COWBOYS?"
PRODUCER. "Barely; go on"
ME. "CIA has to overthrow a Leftist government in Latin America and needs deniable experts so they drag all their old guys from the Contra days out of mothballs & tell them 'just go hog wild'"

the gimmick is that the deniable old covert action guys get all geared up and get down there

and then they discover the hotshot legend retired CIA agent in charge

doesn't speak Spanish

none of them speak Spanish

so they track down the legendary hotshot's old fixer Enrique

who is shocked to see them

because he has risen to the post of Minister of Finance

so Enrique has no choice but to come clean to his cousin, an old guerrilla whose offspring benefit handsomely from Enrique's success

so *he* has to put *his* band back together to kill these guys before they can upend poor Enrique's (and his) hard-won comfortable little world.

PRODUCER. "I can't make that movie, dude, that's probably exactly what is happening right now"

I saw Mel Gibson as the CIA agent but holy shit I would cast Joaquim de Almeida *so hard*

(maybe Harrison Ford is the CIA agent and it's a CLEAR AND PRESENT DANGER reunion)
