there is something so incredibly narcissistic and fundamentally anti-political about taking an act of political violence that literally kills other humans as being first and foremost a bid for your personal attention and social media curation practices
Want to REALLY "not give the shooter what he wants"? Dismantle Islamophobia and white supremacy and consign their powerful, secure, and respectable advocates to the same nameless ignominy that you wish upon the killer itself.
the people who brought us a global war on muslims that's killed between a half and 2 million people have think tank gigs, newspaper columns, and magazine feature bylines, arguing for the same evil they always have. the other half of no notoriety is ending respectable impunity
a lot going on there - and these days in general - in the way of logics of displaced satisfaction + frustrated accountability. IE: the urgent desire to banish various ppl + ideas from consciousness also indexes a real sense of powerlessness about ppl + ideas that we cannot
it's understandable TBH insofar as our norms are basically psychotic. like, we can invoke forgetting when it comes to the name or occult ideas of some individual monster. yet we have to pretend not see how (like in this case) how many of his ideas are functionally identical to
those espoused by mainstream pundits, intellectuals, policy folks, commentators, etc which are normalized and ubiquitous. even - and especially! - in times like these, when those same people get treated as authorities on how to interpret things in the first place. it's madness
and at the top of the pyramid, the person whose ubiquitous presence one can apparently do nothing about, and who says and does what he does with no accountability whatsoever
