/ So for today's lesson in "censorship", let's look at the following thread and original article that it points to, where they describe the act, but studiously avoid using the word that describes the act. They use words like "content moderation" instead.
/ "But Rob, this content is different, it's harmful to society". That's what everyone claims when they censor content, that the content they are censoring is different. That's why "censorship" means precisely this content.
/ "But Rob, the word means when government does it, Facebook is a private organization". No, the word applies to private organizations, too. While "1st Amendment" only applies to government, "censorship" applies anywhere.
/ "But private organizations should be free to remove content they don't like". Yes, but it doesn't mean it's a good thing. Facebook does lots of things we don't like that they should nonetheless be free to do. I'll defend your right to smoke, but it's still not good.
/ "But platforms need to moderate/curate content to improve content for readers, to get rid of stuff readers don't want to see". Yes, but in this case, the issue is removing content readers/viewers want, not removing content they don't want.
/ Moreover, responding to outsider demands about what should be seen, not based upon platforms own decisions about what customers want, or based upon what the customers say they want.
