"Puberty blockers can only be given to children from about 12, who have gone through extensive counselling and discussion with their families and medical experts" - Penny Mordaunt, Minister for Women & Equalities @Commonswomequ on Mumsnet eleanorscottarchaeology.com/els-blog/2019/…
"This is something the NHS has been carefully and sensibly dealing with for years –making the best decision for each individual child, in conjunction with their families, weighing up all the risks." This lack of knowledge & patronisation is unacceptable from a government minister
In fact, Tavistock clinicians have expressed grave concerns about the possibility of "long term damage" to children and the pressure from lobby groups to fast-track them onto puberty blockers and cross-sex hormones. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6…
The Royal College of General Practitioners had already taken off its website the training from one such lobby group, GIRES, after complaints from doctors who "felt it pushed them to guide patients towards gender reassignment." thetimes.co.uk/article/traini…
Tavistock governor resigned bc children given "Treatment that has unknown far‑reaching consequences and that, without sufficient exploration as to the child’s feelings and motives, can have devastating life‑long effects on their identity and development." dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6…
"The GIDS service as it now functions [is] not fit for purpose and children’s ends are being met in a woeful, inadequate manner and some will live on with the damaging consequences.” Parents, like the ones dismissed on Mumsnet, had written with concerns. theguardian.com/society/2019/f…
Oxford professor Michael Biggs then uncovered serious negative results of puberty blocking medication, results the Tavistock had not published from a trial they had declared "a great success." telegraph.co.uk/news/2019/03/0…
Full research results here: the experiment with puberty blockers is ongoing, with over a thousand children so far having undergone this treatment which blocks the growth of their bodies and their brains. transgendertrend.com/tavistock-expe…
BBC Panorama revealed the results of a study by Professor Carl Heneghan: "In the absence of evidence, I just do not understand how they can inform children, adolescents and parents and families in a way that helps them make an informed decision." bbc.co.uk/news/health-47…
Prof Heneghan said there was an "urgent" need for a new regulator in the field and "much more "rigorous" and "robust" research was needed into the effects of drugs given to young transgender people." You can watch the Panorama episode here. bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episod…
Conclusion of Prof Heneghan's analysis of the most recent international research: "We are also ignorant of the long-term safety profiles of the different GAH regimens. The current evidence base does not support informed decision making and safe practice." blogs.bmj.com/bmjebmspotligh…
Bell: some "'take up a trans identity as a solution' to 'multiple problems such as historic child abuse in the family, bereavement, homophobia, and a very significant incidence of autism spectrum disorder'." Yet ASD child is removed from cautious parents: dailymail.co.uk/news/article-6…
There is evidence for caution: "The evidence of medium-term benefit from hormonal treatment and puberty blockers is based on weak follow-up studies. The guideline does not consider longer-term effects, including the difficult issue of detransition." thelancet.com/journals/lance…
"In contrast to previous medical scandals that pathologised homosexuality, something different may be happening here. In effect, transitioning children who would otherwise have grown up lesbian, gay or bisexual may introduce another form of conversion." bmj.com/content/364/bm…
It's time that @Commonswomequ led the way in calling for a robust evidence-based approach to children who question their "gender identity" and for schools resources to be based on science and facts, not ideology. These are our children. They deserve better than this.
