How can there be like 600 WW2 movies (many of them great) yet almost no Civil War movies, except for a couple mediocre ones from the 90's? The Civil War featured so many epic battles and fascinating characters, so much drama and tragedy, yet screenwriters won't go near it.
I know the answer, of course. A compelling Civil War movie would require you to portray both sides in a mature and nuanced way. But the PC police would demand that the Confederates be made into cartoons, which means you lose many of the most compelling and interesting characters
I wasn’t a huge fan of the book, but I thought Chernow’s hagiography about Grant maybe stood a chance of becoming an epic Hollywood film.
Though SC Gwynne's recent book about Stonewall was much more interesting and balanced. But there is no way in hell that we're ever going to see a Stonewall biopic, as fascinating as it would be
