Hello from former AG Jeff Sessions' chair ceremony at DOJ. Spotted so far also returning to the building today: former acting AG Matt Whitaker (who was Sessions' chief of staff) and former Sessions spox Sarah Flores
Sessions entered the room to a standing ovation (along with AG Barr and DAG Rosenstein)
Rosenstein in his remarks says that no attorney general's tenure "goes exactly as planned ... Jeff Sessions stayed true to his values." Later, he says that an AG's success is measured by accomplishments, not length of service
Fyi, a chair ceremony is where the former AG literally gets his old cabinet chair
AG Barr just spoke, and you will be surprised to hear he did *not* use Jeff Sessions' chair ceremony to announce the timing of Mueller's report. He praised Sessions for the team he'd assembled and his work: "You set an agenda and priorities that are just what the country needs"
Per DOJ tradition, Sessions is presented with a shadowbox containing all the badges used by law enforcement agencies under DOJ
The chair has been presented to Sessions: It was a brown leather chair, no ornamentation (again, it's literally the chair that Sessions sat in when he participated in the cabinet)
Sessions spoke briefly, thanking his family (he and his wife are celebrating their 50th anniversary this year) and everyone at DOJ. Of his tenure as AG, he said it was a "special time" when they targeted violent crime and rebuilt trust with law enforcement
Of new AG Barr, who Sessions served with in the HW Bush administration, Sessions said: "Let me express my strong support for AG Barr." When he finished speaking, he received a final standing ovation from the room
