Samuel Patten, the longtime DC lobbyist who pleaded guilty to failing to report his work for Ukraine (a la Paul Manafort), would like no prison time please, per his sentencing memo assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5798…
Patten tries to distance himself from Manafort: "It is also relevant that unlike many of the more recent FARA prosecutions, of which this Court is well aware, Mr. Patten did not create companies or entities to hide who he was working for or to conceal foreign influence"
Patten has the same judge as Manafort in DC, US District Judge Amy Berman Jackson — so, yes, she is "well aware"
As for helping a Ukrainian client buy 2017 inauguration tickets, Patten disputes that this was about funneling foreign money to the Trump campaign: "Mr. Patten not only openly opposed the Trump candidacy but even broke with his party when he voted for President Trump’s opponent"
Patten's memo notes that he's been friends with Konstantin Kilimnik (remember Manafort's co-defendant?) since 2001, and they went into biz together in 2014, but "at no point did Mr. Patten know, believe, or suspect that Kilimnik was connected in any way to Russian intelligence"
Patten's lawyers argue that giving him probation and no time behind bars wouldn't create sentencing disparties because what he did wasn't as bad as Alex van der Zwaan/George Papadopous/Michael Flynn
Just in: Prosecutors aren't advocating for a specific sentence for Patten, but they are asking for a downward departure because he provided "substantial assistance" to the government assets.documentcloud.org/documents/5798…
"In addition, due to his prior work and experience as a political consultant overseas, Patten has served as a valuable resource for the government in a number of other criminal investigations, providing helpful information about additional individuals and entities."
