I helped my wife's business (moagusto.com) review applications for Production Manager. I almost wept for Nigeria. In a country where people claim there are no jobs, the lack of initiative and effort when applying for jobs is appalling. Some problems I noticed (thread):
1/ some people hadn't bothered to check the job title and were applying for business development, sales, social media, etc. Nothing explaining that they recognize it's for a different job and then providing a superbly compelling reason why the company needs their skills. "Reject.
2/ some had salary expectations that were 3-4x what the job posting clearly stated was the salary range. Nothing to show why they are commanding so much more than others applying for the same job. On the job you'll need attention to detail. Reject.
3/ some didn't bother writing a cover letter explaining why they want this specific job and want to work for this specific company. Their work experience didn't stand out either. On the job you'll be required to be thorough. Lack of effort. Reject.
4/ some submitted applications full of typos, incoherent sentences and no clear demonstration of an attempt to impress the employer. They could've had a friend, parent, mentor, pastor, etc review their application. On the job, you'll be expected to be resourceful. Reject.
5/ and some had no experience at all but were basically saying "trust me I'll figure it out." No online courses taken. No attempt to volunteer somewhere. Not even a university project or initiative or student club that can show their leadership or team skills. Reject.
A fundamental component of getting a university degree and/or completing NYSC should be a required course in professional development and job searching. Tough that still leaves the talent/skill problem unsolved.
