Next up is “An Introduction to GraphQL” with @icco from @Google #SRECon
What is GraphQL?
Now let’s make it more real
One more time! I’m glad he made this definition much more accessible!
Key: The shape of the request defines the shape of the response
Nested queries allow for more complex forms.
GraphQL is STRONGLY typed! The schema defines types and object relationships.
GraphQL has a default built in query that returns documentation on a specified field, as well as the type for that field.
Facebook claims they haven’t had to version their API’s since 2012 because they can continuously update their schema via GraphQL
A big takeaway from production issues: query complexity easily becomes an issue. If you can, put hard limits on the complexity of queries to avoid resource abuse.
On the flip side, it is also easy to make GIGANTIC requests/responses (think 50+ KB responses). One way to counter this is through caching - persistent queries. Apollo and Relay are two projects in this space.
