Pro-life rhetorical strategy is worthy of its own thread

I've thought for a while that the pro-life movement was shooting itself in the foot

They were relying on DISGUST at the expense of RIDICULE
When I was in college, the pro-life tables always had these disgusting images

The theory, I suppose, is that one would be disgusted by the barbarity and motivated to join their cause

The effect is the exact opposite - associating disgusting images with the pro-life movement
better to use RIDICULE when possible

in 2019 the pro-choice position articulated by Northam - and most of the Democratic candidates - is RIDICULOUS

So stuff like this should work better

If you're on the right, and you're describing your opponents or their ideas:

1) Use BIGOT/BIGOTRY, not RACIST/RACISM

2) Use CONSPIRACY THEORY/THEORIST, not HOAX/HOAXER

3) Use PROGRESSIVE PRIVILEGE, not DOUBLE STANDARD/HYPOCRISY
"But Will, Dems are the real racists!"

They've redefined racism to mean prejudice+power.

You can take the time to fight them on that.

Or you can just frame their intolerance as BIGOTRY

Which:

1) they haven't redefined
2) sounds terrible
3) has terrible connotations
It's also a subtle high ground maneuver

Racism is just one form of bigotry

By opposing BIGOTRY you are opposing intolerance generally

Does anyone think intolerance is good?

For Americans, a quick rough guide to what just happened with Brexit. First up, there was a referendum about leaving the E.U. which “leave” narrowly won. Article 50 was invoked, saying the UK had 2 years until it would be out of the E.U. permanently - that runs out in March. /1
Prime Minister May spent much of the last two years attempting to negotiate a deal for the withdrawal from the E.U., but over the last couple of years it has become increasingly clear that there is no consensus in Parliament as to what that deal should look like. /2
This is partly because the scale of the decision/its implications have become clear over time. Some in parliament have doubled down on leaving and wish no deal at all with the E.U. (falling back on World Trade Organisarkon standards) but this is generally thought to be bad. /3

Let's go back a while, to the late nineteenth century, when Jews first began to arrive in the UK in larger numbers than before, to escape poverty and antisemitism in the Tsarist empire. These 'economic migrants' as they would now be called, were not welcomed in certain circles.
In 1887, the Conservative MP for Tower Hamlets, Captain Colomb, wondered 'what great states of the world other than Great Britain permit the immigration of destitute aliens without restriction.' Even then, we were a 'soft touch', it seems.
