Our @HarvardHBS MBA course on #ManagingTheFutureOfWork is underway!

I share a few key ideas from each class that sparked conversation.

Class 13 was devoted to students' plans to shape the future of work! We discussed mini-cases based on their companies.
1: @conveyiq's candidate management system. Well-positioned in the market, ConveyIQ sees automated text & video interview analysis as a big growth area. Class worked on requirements for tech performance & whether recruiters would feel augmented or replaced

2: @dexairobotics' robot Alfred, which integrates into food service workflows & aims to eliminate large turnover/staffing issues. Class worked on how Dexai can show ROI and how Alfred will change the nature of future work for food service staff

3: Chinese platform ABF links thoughtful young professionals seeking meaning with NGOs that need consulting services. With ambitious goals, it needs to add users. Key questions: who is the customer (consultant or NGO?) & what is the value offered to the young professionals?

Class 14 discussed the future of unions and organized labor.
Union membership has steadily declined over the past 50 years, but the majority of class predicted union ranks would hold steady or grow by 2030. Why? 1) Unions could provide training for skills acquisition, which is vital to future of work…
& 2) serve as rallying points for increasingly disenfranchized workers. Younger ppl view unions particularly favorably. Almost 70% of 2018 Pew survey respondents ages 18 -29 said they favorably viewed unions. Only 46% of the same group viewed biz favorably

I share a few key ideas from each class that sparked conversation.

Class 12 looked at Walmart's efforts to compete in the age of ecommerce, including by revamping its workforce (case 819-042).
The Great Recession hammered lower-skill workers: even in the recovery, employment numbers have been lagging. Walmart, the US' largest private employer, employs a significant proportion of lower-skilled workers - changes it makes have national impact.
Beginning in 2015, Walmart (under new CEO Doug McMillon) made a series of investments in its workforce, which required greater skills for handling groceries, increased customer service, etc. At times, the market hammered Walmart on announcing these investments, but they stuck.

Classes 10 & 11 focused on the care economy. Check out @JosephBFuller & Manjari Raman's recent report: hbs.edu/managing-the-f…
Demographic trends have reshaped the economy. Rising women's LFPR was the largest driver of US GDP growth since the 60s, but this force has plateaued and the population is rapidly aging. The Care Economy is vital for keeping the workforce strong in numbers and productivity.
Antiquated workplace policies don't reflect well the role of women in the economy and the care responsibilities that all workers can face, from young kids to elderly parents to both at once (the "sandwich" generation).

It all began quite well. Another evil empire was confronted & beaten, that of the Nazis. U.S. troops were heroes as they arrived, albeit belatedly to help embattled Britain as she fought valiantly & single-handedly against the purest evil of those days.

WWII was the U.S.A. at her best. At home tho people were unsure whether they had anything to gain by being involved. Many said they did not. And at least 20,000 who attended a Nazi rally in New York in 1939 would have fought with the Nazis if they could.

Wow - I forgot about all the cool stuff we discussed: state-level poverty programs, switching to a service-based economy in rural areas, the Case-Deaton white death paper, the liberal elite write-off of working class whites, white economic privilege, & class anger/resentment.
...specific ways for historians to get *real* history to average Americans, how to combat racism through class & labor issues, the pain & anguish of the "psychic death" of rural whites, & adapting a federal jobs program to the state level...

I've been thinking about #PlanS a lot since the announcement. I've been reflecting on my experience with the foundation's policy implementation. Random thoughts:

I agree & think that there is enough funder experience in #openaccess policy implementation to successfully implement this. While it's important to critically review each new policy development the community that wants to see change really needs to support any effort to change
It can be scary being first in something - however it can also reaffirm that need for change. So far I haven't seen many examples of open access being a detriment to research. For PlanS this isn't a single entity, but an entire coalition, which is quite impressive.

My day is spent in mortal fear, worrying that I'm going to accidentally click away in Slack and forget what channel or DM that last important thing I forgot to mark for follow up was in.
As the first Slack-native companies without internal email cultures get larger, Slack will need to grow up to solve their problems the same way email had to grow up two decades ago.
When I led the redesign of the Outlook user interface in 2003, we felt similar growing pains: people were getting 5x, 10x, 100x more mail than they ever got before. Users felt out of control; they lacked the tools and affordances to manage this constant deluge.
