Speaking of judicial nominations, there is a *situation* in DC: There are 10 vacancies in DC Superior court and 2 on the DC Court of Appeals. The chief judges of these courts had a "productive and encouraging" meeting with the White House counsel's office last week, per release
Notwithstanding the positive tone of this release, the fact that the vacancy situation in the local DC courts reached a point where the chief judges had to sit down with the White House is a big deal. Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton sent a letter to the Senate today about it:
A refresher on what the White House has to do with DC's local courts: The president nominates local judges. They go through the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, instead of the Senate Judiciary Committee, and finally must get a vote in the full Senate
This is not the first time DC's local courts have faced significant vacancies because of inaction by the White House and the Senate. This is behind a paywall now, but under Obama there was a 2.5-year period when no DC Superior Court judges were confirmed: law.com/nationallawjou…
