I think TIG MPs did a principled thing, rare in this Parliament, when they each resigned the whip. But abstaining en bloc on all substantive outcomes yesterday simply makes good the criticism that all they have in common is disaffection.
Remember Nick Clegg's confession "we will bring a heart to the Tory Government and a brain to a Labour one" that the LibDems had nothing to offer? And remember what happened next? independent.co.uk/voices/comment…

First, those of us who have followed Facebook in the tax sphere experience it as viewing regulation as something to be followed in the letter but gamed in the spirit.
Second, who amongst us believes Government is equipped to create a fit for purpose regulatory framework? And when it turns to Facebook - as it must - for help will Facebook act responsibly or maximise its regulatory space?

If Labour still wants Brexit, and to avoid tearing itself apart, it needs to take up with vigour the idea of Associate EU Citizenship for those who want it - and ensure it is part of the Political Declaration.
The Treaties create a new legal order giving rights to the peoples - and not just the states - of Europe. The UK is not a monolith - and Associate EU Citizenship pulls from the wreckage of any Brexit something of inestimable value to those who choose to take it up.
When first proposed, the idea foundered because of a lack of interest from our own Government; an ugly disdain of those who saw and see their personal identities inextricably bound up with Europe.

The Cooper/Letwin Bill looks like a dangerous distraction. First, the timescale is too long. Second, it is too vague. Third, it doesn’t specify what happens if the EU proposes a different date. Fourth, it doesn’t specify what happens if the EU imposes conditions for an extension.
First, the envisaged timescale - starting on Wednesday when we have nine days to go - is the Act passes both Houses THEN:
D1: Receives Royal Assent
D2: PM moves a Motion
DX: PM asks for an extension of time
DX+X (Y): EU responds
Day Y+1: PM moves a Motion
Day Y=2: then what?
Is this all really going to happen in nine days?

(Apols the Y=2 should read Y+2).

Working on these issues, especially in physics, can sometimes seem outright discouraging and unappreciated — so the engagement, thoughtful questions, and curiosity of my faculty colleagues across the University was very encouraging.
In previous years, it seems the Senate just heard reports on diversity *numbers*, not on actual concrete actions & steps being taken at the local dept & school level. Great to hear what other depts & schools are doing *differently* on admissions, training, faculty hiring, etc.

@nats_io @CloudNativeFdn The way we build systems has fundamentally changed. Containers, serverless, IoT—computation is increasingly distributed and ephemeral, yet our systems mindset is lagging.
Life is mostly asynchronous, and so are distributed software systems. This introduces a host of new failure modes and design implications.
