Consider Detroit is home base for Quicken loans. What role is Quicken playing in the almost complete lockout of mortgage loans to black homebuyers even as it plays a major role in the revitalization (gentrification) of downtown Detroit. How many loans is Quicken issuing here?
So, as black people accounting for 84 percent of Detroits pop got virtually the same number of home loans as white people who accounted for 10 percent of pop, you can understand why many black Detroiters didn’t buy that this ad placed by Dan Gilbert’s company was a mistake.
Anyone who thinks it’s accidental that black people continue to be locked out of the largest producer of wealth in this country is in denial. Congress passed the Fair@Housing Act 51 years ago this month ONLY because Dr King got assassinated and more than 100 cities rioted.
We’ve never seen widescale, strong enforcement against housing discrimination. Most banks will never face a penalty for excluding black strivers. The systems of inequality simply self replicate.
