I am so *incredibly* impressed with this brave and original take that pretends: The federal government = WHITE PEOPLE, that the federal government did not deny reparations to the living victims of slavery, that racial apartheid against slave descendants did not end until 1968.
Ok, in case it is not clear: Reparations is to be paid not by WHITE PEOPLE but by the federal government and the fact that you equate these things says everything about who you think are real citizens who you think are not.
Also, you might want to do a little research into this thing called restitution, which is paid to descendants of survivors all of the damn time. And also, learn how debt can be inherited just like wealth. The federal govt is still here, as is the wealth created by slavery.
This is the whole problem with those making the argument against reparations -- they do so with absolutely no rigor. It's embarrassing.
I mean, when were black people have supposed to have gotten these reparations? When federal troops were withdrawing from the South after Reconstruction, leaving black people completely disenfranchised and subordinated by their former "masters?"
Or, should they gotten them when their very federal government was segregating them in the military, in the government, passing laws to codify anti-black discrimination in housing, employment and schools?
Maybe they should have gotten them during Jim Crow when the federal government refused to protect black people from being lynched, when the federal government created redlining to keep black people from getting home loans, when it wrote them out of much of the New Deal?
Black people demanded reparations from the federal government from the moment of emancipation. The federal government -- made 100 percent of white people -- refused. So, tell me, whose fault is it that no living victims of slavery got reparations?
Do you want to sit with all Jim Crow survivors who were denied basic humanity and the ability to buy homes, work certain jobs, attend well-funded schools, who saw family members murdered with no due process, all because they descended from slaves that their are no living victims?
@Jeff_Jacoby , I'd really like an answer to this.
Largest, most prosperous slave traders in the U.S.: In Rhode Island. Banking, insurance, actuarial science, all rise up to support slavery. Shipping. The cotton the fuels the Northern factories during the Industrial Revolution. So, talk to me again about % who owned slaves.
I could never be this mediocre.
