This is a great article highlighting a lot of what goes on in AAA games. I have so many thoughts about it, but need to think a bit more before I say anything. You should read it whether you're in the game industry or thinking about getting in....

...I keep thinking about the "stress casualties." I've been there. In an unhealthy work environment where I can't possibly work harder or be better. I'm not happy, fulfilled, & I lose motivation. For a good chunk of my career I thought it was me. I thought I was the problem. 1/7
I put the stress on myself, to fix myself & sort out what was wrong with me. With more time & experience I've come to realize that its almost always: poor leadership & management isn't communicating properly. But the people in the trenches still carry all that stress. 2/7
We try to figure out whats wrong, how we can help. We wonder why the things we're doing aren't working. And then one day you realize all that worry and stress never does anything. But you're still broken. 3/7
How I've learned to deal with this(for better or worse) has been to remove myself from the toxic situation as quickly as possible. It negatively affects me mentally, my health, and my relationships. My attempts to help leads to frustration and then to anger. 4/7
If I can't physically escape, I remind myself constantly that there is no amount of worrying that will "fix" the larger problem. This allows me to not carry that stress and focus myself back on the things that I can affect positively. Like my mind, health, and relationships. 5/7
Now, in a leadership position my job is to lead. To make decisions & be accountable for those decisions. Its also to listen. The people in the trenches are the canaries in the coal mine. Then its about communication. I must communicate why we did or didn't act on a concern. 6/7
Twitter is an amazing thing, but not always the best place for this stuff. I hope this helps someone or lets them know they're not alone when they find themselves in one of these situations. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.
