This is something I hear from populist conservatives also, but I have many thoughts on how “culture war” has become synonymous with “identity politics” in a way that is largely very bad
1. The idea that politics has ever been absent from “identity politics” or “culture wars” is false.

2. The idea that discussing race or gender or inequality, etc is somehow separate and apart from discussing politics writ large is nonsensical.
What do you think the debates of the 1830s and 1840s were about if not issues of identity? The Know Nothings were an identity-based movement! Identity motivated those behind the Free Silver movement!
But I hear time and time again that cultural considerations are a “distraction” from folks on the Right and the Left as if race and class are the triple-option while discussing labor and economics — which have culture as their backbone! — is “real” football
"Taft Hartley was identity politics," she yelled to herself
But seriously, the idea that there’s “real politics” and “culture war/identity politics” and never the twain shall meet is nonsensical and historically ignorant, c’mon guys
“Where’s Jane?” “She’s wandering around Dupont Circle screaming about the election of 1800 as a referendum on identity”
(THIS IS ENTIRELY TRUE, GUYS)
