I'm enjoying reading the pro-crime porn tweets. Lots of irate comments 'why should we care about the bodies of people who died 130 years ago?!' Funny how no one ever says that about military cemeteries or battlefields.
I often wonder how people would react if we constantly poked around in the bodies of a handful of WWI military deserters, examining the bullet wounds that killed them at dawn, whilst all along calling them traitors and never questioning their life stories.
After all, they died over a hundred years ago. Why should it matter? Why should we care who they were? Why should we ask questions? Why shouldn't we just be free to reproduce images of their murdered bodies over and over again. To laugh at them? To defame them?

It's been an incredibly exciting week, with another one to come next week, but I just wanted to give a shout out to the support I've had from a wonderful group of historians and writers in launching this book. You are the best friends and colleagues I could ever wish for.
People like to think that in order to get to the top you need to push others to the side. Nothing could be less true. Friendly support, kindness and a sense of community helps us through our dark writing crises. The idea that competition makes us better creatives is wrong.
One of the greatest things I've ever learned is to drop the jealousy because there's room for everyone to forge their own path, even though it might not appear so at first, when you're struggling and feel unrewarded. No two people's careers will be the same.

Today is publication day for THE FIVE. Writing this book has given me a sense of purpose like no other. Today the names and stories of Polly Nichols, Annie Chapman, Elizabeth Stride, Kate Eddowes and Mary Jane Kelly have a chance to be heard more than the name Jack the Ripper.
If we tell their stories and allow ourselves to know these women as the individuals they were; the sisters, wives, mothers, daughters, servants, ballad sellers, coffee house keepers and sex workers, we can never again look upon them as anonymous victims.
They were real, their lives were real, their killer was real - not a mythical invention, but a man (or woman). When we hear their stories, we can't unhear them. They have forcefully inserted themselves into the narrative of 'Jack the Ripper', never to be removed.

I agree with what @DrEstellePrnq is saying and the frustration. There is a fine balance to be struck and some films will get it right, while others won't. There are so many factors at play that go into making a film.
Often the tone and angle of the film, which is decided at the outset, during the creative process determines the level of accuracy - if the film will be light- hearted, revisionist, faithful to history, or a 'modern' interpretation of events.
A lot of historical inaccuracy creeps in due to budgetary constraints: they can't afford to film on a ship, in a palace, or hire 3000 extras. A lot of people have influence on what's seen on screen - actors change lines or claim 'their character wouldn't do something.

So I was thinking - for every like this post gets, I’ll do my best to post a bit of trivia about some aspect of my relationship with gender, transitioning, acceptance, etc.
