This is so damn brave. Warren is the only senator in the race willing to say how she'll get things done. [Quick thread on why this is so smart]
This is leadership from Warren. It's a tough issue that doesn't fit on a bumper sticker. But it's vital to the progressive cause. All other senators in the race are still relying on platitudes. Warren is the only pragmatic realist treating voters like adults - so far. Here's why:
You can ax the filibuster, or you can let the Koch brothers veto your legislation. That's the choice. Kiss goodbye any hope for climate, health care, or gun violence prevention legislation of substantial size. Or kiss goodbye to the filibuster.
This is particularly true for progressives, because there's essentially no realistic path to a filibuster-proof majority in the future. Demographic trends + polarization make it harder than ever. I had a whole thread on this:
The most alluring argument good progressives *against* axing the filibuster is: what happens when the GOP gets the Prez, Senate, and House again? Won't they do bad things? Three responses to this:
1) McConnell literally just amended the filibuster this week - AGAIN. If the filibuster stands in the way of the GOP, they'll ax it entirely. They just haven't needed to. They're getting their judges. They got their tax cut for the rich. TrumpCare failed to get even 51 votes.
2) The *first* thing Dems should do after axing the filibuster make our democracy more responsive to the people. Things like the Dems' For the People Act - which McConnell called socialism & vowed to kill. This will make it tougher for any party to pass unpopular legislation.
3) Reactionaries are terrified of democracy for a reason. They know that if government represents the people, the reactionaries lose. If, after we reform democracy, some conservatives win elections fair and square - they *should* get their agenda. That's democracy.
Warren's the only senator in the race willing to take a stand here so far. This is good, this is new, and this should prompt the rest of the field to get real.
