Understanding people & their source of ambition is & will always be the hardest & most interesting part of a VC job. Examples of how I myself was misunderstood by many smart, well-meaning people, & // what was really happening behind the scene in those situations: 👇
1) Written off @ school as someone who can never succeed because of a severe stuttering problem // Woke up early secretly for years to practice speaking by reciting poetry to myself.
2) Written off by college professors as a "backbencher" who did just enough to pass // Stayed up night after night learning CS on my own (not my major) & made a career in that field.
3) Took extra 8 months to finish MS program because failed all job interviews // Held two jobs on the side, sent money home monthly, paid off father's home loans.
4) Got rejected by Harvard, Wharton, ISB, Yale, Haas, & many others for my MBA // Worked on a book manuscript & ran a non profit alongside a full time job.
5) Was one of the very last people at the MBA to get a job // Only applied to 3-4 companies, thrice to Google, went through 19 Google interviews across 2 roles before landing the job.
The trick is to know just who has that inexhaustible supply of will-power to keep walking, because, if you do, eventually you reach somewhere no one else has. 🙏
