Let's do this more or less chronologically. Early on, we stopped a BC Liberal plan to sell off a hugely valuable piece of public property to private interests right by the #NorthVan waterfront.

The Finance Minister and I worked together to help the @NVanDistrict receive clarity on this mess of a situation that the BC Liberals left behind for them, leaving many to question whether the BC Liberals had given a donor a sweetheart deal.

On the transportation front, I initiated and then led the Integrated North Shore Transportation Planning Project to produce the North Shore's first ever cross-government transportation action plan.

We'll continue to fund the Lower Lynn and Mountain Highway Interchange Project, which was started under the BC Liberals in partnership with the District and Government of Canada.

INSTPP led to numerous recommendations, of which many are now underway more quickly than they would have without INSTPP because of the cross-government agreement reached on those recommendations. For instance, implementing an Express Bus over the IWMB.

TransLink staff also credited INSTPP for facilitating the quick progress they made with local municipalities on local infrastructure improvements for the North Shore B-Line (the debacle in #WestVan notwithstanding).

Expedited incident clearing measures, as identified by INSTPP are also making progress. The first improvement was announced in October 2018, bringing in better highway maintenance standards and better tow truck standby for the #NorthVan bridges.

We made more progress in February 2019 with a pilot to provide real-time traffic warnings to drivers on the North Shore. Lots of drivers are comfortable using their mobile devices (hands free!) for this kind of information, but still many others are not.

With a historic funding agreement that brings over $7B to the @TransLink @mayors_council 10-Year Plan, the North Shore will see a 16% increase in bus service along with the new Marine-Main B-Line and 10-minute SeaBus service coming this fall.

We're proud to be funding a full rebuild of @HandsworthHSS. The last school to be funded under the previous government was in 2015 and it required the sale of @NVSD44 lands to help fund.

We also moved quickly to secure money to seismically upgrade Mountainside Secondary, within 6 months of the seismic report confirming that all of Mountainside would be at serious risk in event of an earthquake.

Oh, back for a moment to congratulate Lions Gate Hospital for receiving provincial approval on a new acute care tower as well! 108 beds -- all in single bed rooms and 8 new surgical rooms.

I should also note how valuable the new province-wide child care plan is to #NorthVan families. $350/mo fee reductions per child PLUS up to $1250/mo income tested child care subsidy per child on top of the $200/mo pilot program & new spaces described above. Changing lives. ❤️

I did some quick math, and my freelance reported stories in 2018 earned me an average of 30 cents/word, median 27 cents/word. I wasn't able to hit $1/word on any of my stories.

(Average length of pieces was 1950 words)
Will post more or less in chronological order, but first, my highest paying stories.

I'm proud of this short piece I wrote for In These Times. $500 for 622 words - highest paying piece, per word. (travel to Alabama came from an outside grant though)

Every so often, I see glimpses of the Other Twitter saying things like “taxation is legalized extortion” and I’m reminded of my dad telling us that trick-or-treating was institutionalized begging.

You can make anything sound badly this way.
Like, “copyright is legalized censorship.” “Real property ownership is the legalized theft of public property for private gain.”

(I don’t believe either of those things, by the way.)
Yes, taxation is legalized extortion, if the legalized extortion rackets set up schools for children, build roads, and base extortion payments on income.

I'm actually a fan of Corey Robin and was a BernieBro back when that was A Thing. I'm not a socialist -- I'm a pretty reluctant capitalist, and I agree we're getting less free. But I didn't see anything in his big NYT piece that made me more favorably disposed to actual socialism
The only thing I took away from the piece is the main appeal of socialism is the fact that most efforts to "fix capitalism" are a scam by capitalists to further concentrate power in fewer hands, and everybody knows it now so why not try literally anything else.
This seems to be more or less true, but "socialism" isn't the only thing you can sell with the formula, "the current thing isn't working, so lets end it not mend it, and try something radically different." You can also sell dictatorship with that formula.
