Good morning brethren, today’s sermon will be a difficult but honest one.

1. I wasn’t going to say anything about #Zamfara, or lend my voice to the sudden outrage. As most of you will know, I hate hypocrisy.

Where was this outrage BEFORE the elections when people were dying?
2. Even with this new anger at FG’s failure to secure lives & property, people are STILL reluctant to hold @mbuhari the C-in-C to account, blaming @GovYari instead

3. Some are angry that Baba was silent about #Zamfara but managed to express his sadness at the death of a Lagosian
4. The same people that mocked us when we protested against the REFUSAL of the FG and @mBuhari to act against killers in #Benue, #SouthernKaduna, #Taraba, #Plateau are organizing a tokenistic protest on a Saturday while Baba is out of the country and are “slightly pissed” at him.
5. And what about the people of Zamfara? Despite the more than 8 year reign of terror these bandits held over the state, the people not only voted for Baba to return, they sent the “most useless governor in Nigeria” to the Senate.
6. So I get it. I understand why some of us were reluctant to trend that ridiculous hashtag & why others stayed away from that useless protest. I understand why we don’t care about ‘their’ self-inflicted suffering. It’s human nature.

7. But today I want to talk about compassion.
8. Compassion has nothing to do with politics, ethnicity or even stupidity. It simply calls for you to feel sorry when someone else suffers.

9. In Zamfara, women and children are being raped, kidnapped, & slaughtered.
10. And I won’t pretend I’m better than any of you. I had also hardened my heart till I saw tweets from @henryshield & @AishaYesufu this morning. And they reminded me that I was in danger of losing my compassion, and with it perhaps my humanity. We all are.
11. So turn away from those annoying hypocrites who have suddenly realized Buhari has failed after voting him in for a 2nd term that has not even started.

12. Ignore the voices of those trying to bait you into an angry, divisive reaction.

13. Spend today focusing on compassion.
14. And if or when you find your compassion, say a quiet prayer for the lives of those lost to this seemingly uncontrollable violence ravaging Nigeria.

15. And if you want to tweet, do so for Zamfara.

16. If you want to march, let it be because your compassion compels you to.
17. I’ll end with this story:

On the cross, executed by the very men He had come to save, Jesus said “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do.”

18. This Easter, I pray we rediscover compassion in our hearts.

19. And I pray God forgives us all.

20. Amen.
