Musical pillars at the Ranga Mantapa at the Vittala Temple in Hampi.

There are 56 such pillars in the mantapam. Each pillar is surrounded by 7 smaller pillars which produce a distinct musical note from our Saptaswaras on tapping.

Some of the pillars suffered extensive damage after islamic invasions, while some survived. In the 1920s colonial brits too inflicted damage in the name of research when they uprooted one pillar to study its properties. ASI was in the process of restoring last time I was at Hampi
Despite the ASI's best efforts, it'll be nearly impossible for them to achieve the acoustic properties of the old pillars which had the special capability to emulate the Swaras produced by every instrument type; be it percussion, string or wind. So much was lost after 1565...
