Pro-tip that will make I guarantee will make your job application better than 99% of other applicants:

Read any book on copywriting and apply it to your resume and cover letter.
By far, the biggest mistake I see in job applications is a complete failure to "enter the conversation going on in your prospect's mind" which is copywriting 101.

1/ One of my big learnings over the last ~10 years is that the reality of business has a surprising amount of detail.
2/ One of the implications of this is that a novice reads some case custody or starts with some blank spreadsheet of what the “optimal” strategy is and usually the one that looks optimal is one about which you are most ignorant
3/ It looks optimal precisely because you are ignorant about it. Whereas the thing that will actually work looks covered in worts because you understand all the flaws and limitations.

Though it's aimed at investors, I've found the Kelly Criterion a generally helpful model for thinking about big life decisions.
Some life Lessons from Kelly Criterion might be:

1. Optimizing long-term returns requires dealing with high levels of volatility in the short term
2. Place few, larger bets when you have high confidence and no bets when you have low confidence - don't get stuck in the middle
3. Never bet all the chips
4. If you're on a bad streak, don't double down to try and make it back, dial it down instead.

Once upon a time I was in a position to interview law clerks and make hiring recommendations. Here is some basic dos and donts for law clerk interviews and applications
Do try and see if the judge you’re applying for has a political slant, and if so, remove those orgs from your resume that may not fit. There are just too many applicants that fit for you to get “pulled out the stack” with an ill fitting resume
Do treat the clerks and secretary and court reporter and deputy and whoever else you meet with the utmost respect. Cuz I promise you the court reporter has way more pull than you think and will nix your shit if you’re rude

1/ Recently finished Menon’s translation of Bhagavad Gita, the holy #book of Hindus. There’s a lot to like about it, but it leaves a few issues unresolved.

Here are my notes on Gita.
2/ The story revolves around the warrior Arjuna who faces conflict during a war with his cousins.

He simply cannot bring himself to kill the people he grew up with. So he tells his charioteer, Krishna, that he’d rather die than go to war.
3/ This conflict is used as a backdrop by Krishna, who actually is an incarnation of God, to reveal the truth of the world to Arjuna.

The ideas and concepts in Gita are consistent with other Hindu philosophies and ideas

Pro-Tip [Refactoring]: Prioritize reading the code over learning about the application domain.
Not so long ago, I worked with a team that was hacking a humongous (>3mloc) perl codebase with their main focus being performance. I set out to show them that the crazy crap I was showing them about TDD and refactoring would be useful.
The critical call was to a method that had to update patient status using a variety of pretty complex logic. We'd brought just that chunk under about 20% test the week before, so I forged in boldly.

Years ago, someone asked me if I would edit her CV. Because your girl's always hustling, I said yes and quickly taught myself about what recruiters want to see in a #Resume. Since then, #CVEditing has become something I do regularly. Here's a thread on a few things I've learnt.
People will tell you not to make the basic errors - spelling mistakes, hard-to-read fonts, inaccurate info, etc. But the problem I see most often is that people's CVs don't reflect who they are. Your CV should be who you are and what you offer an employer, on paper.
Instead, people take the CV format they were taught in school and just fill in the blanks. They list "responsibilities" rather than focusing on the value they add to the workplace. Your CV needs to make you stand out from the rest of the candidates for a job you're targeting.
