1, A number of people are discussing the relative merits of the provincial transit proposal and existing or previous transit plans. They should not. Let me explain.
2. The single most important fact about the proposal is that it substantially differs in design and technology from existing plans. It therefore means going back to the drawing board, doing new engineering and land use work. That work will take years.
3. In other words, what is proposed is to stop work on our current transit plans and start all over. There is no way that any of this will be ready to go to tender within the terms of office of the current Council or the current Ontario government.
4. We cannot treat the proposal as real. The map is not real. The technology choices are not real. The money being offered is not real. If you are comparing it to an existing plan, you are comparing something that is real with something that is not: a pointless exercise.
5. This is the trap Toronto Council languished in during the Ford mayoralty. If you want to understand what is being offered, go stand at Victoria Park and Sheppard and try to find the subway station the Fords promised. There's nothing there. Just like this "plan". - end
