I just confirmed that Trump tried to pressure U.S. authorities to release immigrant detainees onto the streets of "sanctuary cities." Both DHS & WH emailed same quote: "This was a suggestion that was floated & rejected, which ended any further discussion." First reported by WaPo.
Just talked to a Dem member of Congress who works on immigration who said he was not surprised by the move by President Trump.
Ashley Etienne, Pelosi's comms dir: “The extent of this administration’s cynicism and cruelty cannot be overstated. Using human beings—including little children—as pawns in their warped game to perpetuate fear and demonize immigrants is despicable, and in some cases, criminal."
The Center for Immigration Studies says there are hundreds of sanctuary cities across the United States. A map of cities that limit their cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement with 2020 in mind helps you understand Trump’s motive: cis.org/Map-Sanctuary-…)
It’s also now plainly true that the Trump administration — through its family separation policy and now this proposal to drop immigrant detainees in sanctuary cities — has quite literally looked at the physical bodies of immigrants as a means of carrying out hardline policies.
