Re Talia Levin, and how some folks are shocked about a New Yorker being so oblivious about 9/11: I was there, back in 2001, but that’s not the point of my story:
I lived in Brooklyn next door to a great musician who I greatly looked up to (and no, I won’t reveal his name).

Knocked on his door around 3pm, the day of the attack. Smoke was in the sky and papers from WTC were landing in the streets.
He said, “What’s the big fuss about? They’re only buildings.”

Completely obvlivious to the fact that tens of thousands of people were in the buildings and could’ve easily died—it was incredible that so many managed to get out (including my sister).
Not a week later, I was walking down 1st Avenue and ran into another musician. He was bitter about how we will be probably going to war now, and will kill tens of thousands of people. “Terrorists?” I asked. Yeah, he didn’t care. Here was a New Yorker, on the week of 9/11.
Point of the story is, the same day that 3000 people were slaughtered in the WTC, there were leftists who had absolutely zero feeling about their fellow New Yorkers. It was there from the start, in a small way. Now that almost 20 years has passed, it’s only grown.
