This is authoritarianism: he's lying about the law to create support for a human rights violation. (1) "Just out" implies a new development in his favor, like a court order, when in reality his plan was leaked, along with his administration's own conclusion it was illegal. /1
(2) His claim is false: there is no such "absolute right," nor has he made any "demand" beyond the tweet. Nor can he: as the Supreme Court reaffirmed in 1997, the Constitution prohibits "federal commandeering of state governments." That's how he lost the sanctuary cities cases./2
(3) The reason he's lying about the law is to normalize arbitrary and punitive conduct by the Executive, as if this was always among the President's powers. He wants to create the impression among his supporters, already conditioned to accept victimhood, that this is typical, /3
and that he is using it to their benefit now, he is "hurting the right people." The right-wing media is happily complicit, and then major media is dumbly complicit, when they both-sides this by reporting it as a genuine debate, rather than as an objective falsehood. Moreover, /4
many of the reports leave out an essential piece of context: Trump's proposing another forced transfer of migrants, an inherent human rights concern, and the ongoing transfer has been such a catastrophe the Admin isn't sure where 47,000 children went. /end usatoday.com/story/news/pol…
