John Minford, #SunTzu 5: 7 "There are but five notes, and yet their permutations are more than can ever be heard."

I'm not quite sure how I fell into it, but in creating my own commentary, I try very hard to live by the rule: this verse, now. That is, I try not to skip ahead. It's a type of intense focus. Yet, there are times when the rule must be broken. This is such a verse.

There is so much meaning in this verse by itself, I hate to break the rule. But, as you'll see in a moment, we really do require verse 5: 10 in order to place the verse in its context. You should go ahead and read verse 8 and 9 right now, on your own right now. They help.

5: 10 "In the dynamics of War, there but these two--indirect and direct--and yet their permutations are inexhaustible. The give rise to each other in a never-ending, inexhaustible cycle."

We will certainly come back to verse 5: 10 in three days, and we will also refer to it in tomorrow's and the day after's commentaries. For now, please follow that music and warfare are connected, if we wish to listen to Master Sun.

Inexhaustible permutations are obviously a theme. In warfare, just the two elements, direct and indirect, give us our inexhaustible basis. Right now, though, Master Sun wants us to hear the notes, the scale, the Chinese pentatonic scale of just five notes.

Do, Re, Mi, Fa, So, La, Ti, Do. That's an octave. The Do above is the eighth note in the cycle, thus octave. There are just seven notes in the scale. And yes, the permutations are infinite.

Can you hear it, Master Sun asks us? Can you hear the notes of the scale, within, inside all the songs that are played? Can you feel the force, the power, of just two notes, direct and indirect notes, when waging war?

Leader, oh leader. You have powers beyond your imagining. You have the five
Chinese notes. You have the seven Western notes. You can play any song, write any tune. You are infinite, as are the sounds of the notes of the scale. Can you hear it? Can you hear your own infinity?

Victory has a sound. Now attack. A beat. Now step back. A beat. Advance. A beat. Retreat. A beat. There is a metronome of perfect beats, beating the song of victory. Can you hear it? Can you sync with your metronome of victory?

I assure you, you can. When you add the notes with the beats, you have music. You have the steps of victory. It truly is that simple. Do, Re, Mi. A, B, C. 1, 2, 3. There are elements of battle, and they are simple. You can master them, if you will. What are they?

We know from verse 5: 10. They are direct and indirect. We attack with direct. We win with indirect. The front is what we attack, directly. The rear is what we attack indirectly. Contemplate. Contemplate. Boldly attack directly. Surreptitiously, attack indirectly.

Win.
