We’ve all wanted to download high resolution images of medieval manuscripts for personal use in PowerPoint or DH projects. So… time to explore some solutions for those who don’t yet know. #medievaldownload
The amazing Dezoomify will help you download many images, including those from the British Library's digitised manuscripts site.
Dezoomify is here: ophir.alwaysdata.net/dezoomify/dezo… #medievaldownload
Just paste in your URL and watch Dezoomify work its magic! #medievaldownload
Here’s an example of Dezoomify in action. #medievaldownload
On a Mac, use “Copy Image” and then switch to the Preview app and "File>New from Clipboard”. This works best in Chrome or Firefox. If you have tips for Safari, please share them! #medievaldownload
For IIIF sites, you can often just modify the URL to get the high resolution image. E.g. for Parker on the Web, drag a thumbnail from the page selector into the URL field of your browser.
#medievaldownload
Then replace the antepenultimate section of the URL with “full", e.g. stacks.stanford.edu/image/iiif/gs2…
becomes
stacks.stanford.edu/image/iiif/gs2…
(see screenshot) #medievaldownload
Next, let’s take a look at Cambridge Digital Library. Very helpfully, they provide a “Download” button. Nice! The download is not the maximum resolution though, so if you need the highest quality, keep reading... #medievaldownload
For high res from the Cambridge Digital Library site click on the “Open in Mirador” button and then… #medievaldownload
Next, drag the relevant thumbnail to the URL field of your browser. And then… #medievaldownload
Finally, replace the last 4 sections of the URL with “/info.json” (see example image below) and then paste the resultant URL into Dezoomify (ophir.alwaysdata.net/dezoomify/dezo…)

Don’t want to leave Digital Bodleian out of the mix! First of all, click on the “Open in Mirador” button. #medievaldownload
Next, drag the image thumbnail to the URL field of your browser.
#medievaldownload
Finally, replace the last 4 sections of the URL with “/info.json” (see example image below) and then paste the resultant URL into Dezoomify (ophir.alwaysdata.net/dezoomify/dezo…)

Our next repository is the Digital Vatican. This is more difficult as although they use IIIF, they only allow Mirador, etc. to view a lower resolution image than the one that they have on their website. But still, let’s see what we can do…
#medievaldownload
First click on the "Bibliographic Information" button
#medievaldownload
Next, click on the IIIF button and wait a few seconds for the IIIF manifest to appear. #medievaldownload
Using your browser’s search facility, track down the URL for the folio that you want, e.g. 79v. The URL you want ends with “jp2” (see screenshot). #medievaldownload
Now copy that URL and paste it into Dezoomify and add “/info.json”. Then you’re set!
NB: this is not as high a resolution as on the Digital Vatican site, but it's pretty good. #medievaldownload
If you know how to get the full quality image, please do share that info! #medievaldownload
Next repository? Gallica! First of all, click on the zoom button and zoom to max zoom. #medievaldownload
Now we’re going to need to use the Developer Tools in Chrome. So, View>Developer>Inspect elements.

(There are equivalents in other browsers, e.g. in Safari, it’s Develop>Show JavaScript console). #medievaldownload
Next click on “Application”
(In Safari, click on Resources)
#medievaldownload
Scroll down to “Frames"
#medievaldownload
Find an entry for "Native.jpg” and “Copy link address”. #medievaldownload
Now alter the region and resolution sections to “full” (see example below) #medievaldownload
Well, that's it for the moment. If you’ve got suggestions or requests, let us all know. And please do share hints and tips for these and other sites. #medievaldownload
