We're literally being run by a Kangaroo Court now. Honestly feels that way. Not hyperbole, which feels...weird to feel?
I feel genuine alarm at my genuine alarm. Not taking an ironic public stance. I'm a professional communications advocate. I didn't always feel this way. It's all just pent up, amorphous fear of...something? What I'm not exactly sure I can put into real form. Just of something big
There have been moments I've felt like "this could be a big crack between the past and the future" before. Like when the Supreme Court took up Whole Woman's Health v. Hellerstedt. Especially when they first put it on the docket. I thought "this could be a moment of past & future"
People who don't work in abortion advocacy I think don't get why those of us who have truly see it as something big and world-changing...yes like climate change. If abortion access goes away for the white middle class, it will suddenly be really popular to get illegal abortions.
I've read a lot of "America-but-dystopia" fictional universes. Not just Hunger Games, but Octavia Butler's Acorn series, World War Z, Walking Dead comics and the series, etc, etc. It's a genre. With almost only a few exceptions, none of them talk about pregnancy danger.
If every sexual reproductive act becomes the tiniest bit of risk of a gov't-mandated live birth. That changes how the hetrosexual-sexually-active-who-can't-afford-abortion-live. Oh, and that's been the plan all along for banning abortion. Making American Sex Count For Life Again.
You think death from pregnancy is a thing that only happens in old-timey-movies like Cider House Rules and Revolutionary Road. No. That death rate goes right back up if legal abortion goes away for a good portion of a population. Maybe not same as 1960s, but high
Sometimes being able to see what a future without access to legal abortion fundamentally changes the modern life of reproductive age (and those who care about them) American women and men feels like being Cassandra. Everyone else thinks you must be nuts to possibly think that big
When you work in abortion advocacy, you start to have that imagination about a world without legal abortion. You really *look* at the stories in the past where the women felt trapped by sex-as-in-gender. Every month could be a risk, get raped at wrong day of month, no control
Maybe it's maybe it's my imagination...when I read stories about future fictional America's where there's no access to things like birth control or abortion...it does cross my mind "but how to the women live around pregnancy? Because if you get pregnant in a world of Zombies?
Having unplanned kids is dangerous. We don't acknowledge that. I'm not just talking about medical health, though that is an absolute real risk that is completely brushed away because it's connected to higher rates in one minority group.
Having a pregnancy sprung on you when you have little control of your current circumstances...I know a lot of people think "that's they only way people AGREE to have kids...by just doing it!" No, actually having kids when you aren't sure doesn't always work out 100% for everyone.
So having a pregnancy become a mandatory live birth be a non-zero possibility every time two reproductive people have reproductive sex, seems actually like a big switch from modern life right now. I don't know why people don't feel it that way? Anyway 2019...feels important.
