Don't get confused % with numbers. 22% of the US adult population is 55.44 million and 10% of these users are heavy users which means 5.44million active US adults which is about 2% of the adult population.

I'm not sure if I believe pew on this. Twitter has stated it has 300 million active users which would mean that only 16.5% of it's user base is located in the USA and 83.5% are located in other countries.
Could be; but it doesn't seem to pass the smell test to me. I have met a ton of people from other countries but not 84/16 split. I don't know how twitter internals work, if it keeps people from different cultures and countries somewhat separated.
If it does that could explain the lack of seeing a heavy amount of other countries on trends, time lines comments etc. If not, the numbers seem off. Of course we all could be bots so there's that.
Either way with Trump having almost 60million followers and Obama having more it seems that the numbers pew gives are skewed.
Another possible explianation for the pew numbers could be an effort to down play the impact of social media going into the 2020 elections since pew mentions the Twitter active users are more interested in politics. Who knows.
Interesting numbers either way. Here's another link...
