I instruct an upper-year undergraduate course on Healthy Aging at @queensu - for one of the assignments, students were asked to create an infographic discussing a common myth about aging. I have permission to share some of the infographics with you... 1/7
This assignment was recommended by Dr. Stewart at @queensu. Students were asked to identify why the myth is harmful, use evidence to discuss why they are untrue and suggest ways to combat it. Here are a few examples: 2/7

Scientists only know how to fight #fictions with facts

And that is a dramatic #disadvantage on social media

My latest article is on the #asymmetric power that keeps the #lableak conspiracy myth alive despite mounting scientific evidence against it

In the article, I explain why every time a new scientific report from experts comes out on the origins (like today 🔽), a social media machinery kicks into gear to defame & #harass scientists, push counter-narratives & #poison the infosphere

This is no coincidence, but the inevitable outcome of our broken info sphere & #epistemic crisis.

A crisis where people lose the ability to assess what is real or true.

See, #information has a special function in society it does not only inform our choices and beliefs...

The speeches about the capital that millionaires contribute in taxes and how much the poor and the middle class receive from this forced generosity, are a whole literary genre … 🙄 the millionaire factory of #myths 🙄
What's more, this genre is cultivated above all by those from below, as the principle of the genius of propaganda Edward Bernays says: “you should never say that what you want to sell is good, but make others say it”.
That the poor and the workers (oh! excuse the redundancy) defend the rich as kind donors, is the direct result of such a publicity strategy and, as Bernays himself knew, it is not just a massive inoculation but an exploitation of the weaknesses of the consumer, as is the desire

this regards @jimmy_dore´s recent commentary on a particular @postmates commercial. 🫤

the ad perpetuates the ignorant fallacy & profoundly damaging myth that "sεχ between men = αηαl s∈× & αηαl s∈× = sεχ between men";

that an act most folks (male, female, LGB and hetero among us) find inherently off-putting is a necessary or predominant or inordinately prevalent component of sεχ between men.

(↝ i say this as an LGB♀ who researches for & writes LGB♂ characters – for a gay man´s perspective on the matter, check out actor/comedian @stephenfry & his documentary called _out there_ ↬ , specifically at 1:20:34)

When these ideas are shared, they take on a life of their own as myths. Eventually, these myths are written down in “how-to” books or Web sites. Once written, the #myths seem to become fact. EGMs seem to attract a lot of these myths. The mythification of #slots may be due to the… way the machines are designed. Mythification may be the basis of many of the great works of literature, but, in the case of gambling, it is the source of much misery. In this paper, we will explain how slot machines really work,… and we will discuss and debunk some of the related myths. The paper is divided into five parts. First, we briefly describe the types of electronic games available. Second, we show that problems with human reasoning

Did you know fever is a healthy immune response and temperature upto 104°c is fine. Fevers turn on the body's immune system. They help the body fight infection. Normal fevers between 100° and 104° F (37.8° - 40° C) are good for you. (1/n) #Fever #Myths thread
MYTH. Oral temperatures between 98.7° and 100° F (37.1° to 37.8° C) are low-grade fevers.
FACT. These temperatures are normal. The body's normal temperature changes throughout the day. It peaks in the late afternoon and evening. A true low-grade fever is 100° F to 102° F
Fevers with infections don't cause brain damage. Only temperatures above 108° F (42° C) can cause brain damage. It's very rare for the body temperature to climb this high. It only happens if the air temp is very high. An example is a child left in a closed car during hot weather.

These are the #stories of #math that we celebrate, amplify and make central to the idea of #maths as a #objective #neutral #culture-free subject. #Math can do no #harm, and the #logical “pure math” thinking of #Mathematicians is worthy of emulation. But... 1/x
2/x ... "What about pure mathematics and mathematicians who merely prove theorems? Is there any #ethical component comparable to what you find in other fields of #science?" - R. Hersh in Experiencing #Mathematics
3/x One point of view: "there's no need for #mathematicians to have a code of #ethics, because what we do matters so little that we can do whatever we like."

Myth #1- Previous abdominal surgery and PD are not compatible..

This is the commonest reason why patients are not offered PD
Advanced laparoscopic tube placement can do away with most issues as this slide shows:
We have also done some percutaneous blind and fluoroscopy guided procedures in patients with simple scars such as a C-section; appendectomy and laparoscopic cholecystectomy and overall, not had any issues

Debates about tree planting are not new...

Interesting history by Rangan et al., 2010

Rangan, H., Kull, C.A. & Alexander, L. Forest plantations, water availability, and regional climate change: controversies surrounding Acacia mearnsii plantations in the upper Palnis Hills, southern India. Reg Environ Change 10, 103–117 (2010).…
Just like rangelands in East Africa, which later set the myth of "pristine" savannahs for game parks (depriving the same pastoralists maintaining such systems) the British colonial government was instrumental in India in promoting plantation forestry and restricting #access.

For Public Attention: Do not hoard masks/sanitisers. These are to be used rationally and more so by the frontline health workers. DO NOT PANIC! We need to collectively step up our hygiene and microbiological barrier as a society. Do not fall for quacks. #COVID2019.
Drink as much as warm sterile fluids in order to keep yourself well hydrated. Follow cough etiquettes, especially in public places. Report to a Physician without delay in case of fever, sore throat, running, diarrhoea, dry/productive cough.
An infection with #2019nCoV does not mean a ‘death warrant’, however extremes of age and those with associated co-morbid conditions like Diabetes, Renal Diseases and HIV/AIDS constitute the ‘risk group’. We are to understand the challenge in order to brave it.

Many families (mine included) face tough decisions on what #languages to speak at home. There's a lot of #myths about early #bilingualism , like:
-Kids will get confused
-They'll have lang delays
-They won't learn the majority/dominant language

More info:…
In my family, my dad spoke #arabic and my mom spoke #english. My dad was concerned about me learning English so after about 5 y/o, we hardly spoke Arabic. Since I didn't have any Arabic-speaking peers or teachers, my Arabic suffered attrition and now I understand, but not speak
My case isn't uncommon either-many early #bilinguals and #heritagespeakers often don't have the linguistic support systems (at home or in school) to maintain their languages, due to factors such as lang myths, discrimination, lang policy in schools, etc
