meritocracy is to managing human performance as just killing any slow running tasks is to managing software efficiency.

it isn’t like we don’t have any understanding of humans! it’s that we have a society wide learned helplessness here, from sources varying from the puritans to naive ass capitalism to taylorism and behaviorism.
but look, if you wouldn’t accept an SRE just playing task whack a mole, you shouldn’t accept *human* performance management this naive. there are plenty of good books out there, and while the evidence is complicated and thin in spots, it IS there.
