Four years ago today the #insidebitcoinsnyc conference was the final hook & sinker that dragged me deep down the rabbit hole.
“many long time attendees remarked on the number of “suits” in the room. Compared to other conferences hosted in the Javits Center, the crowd was eclectic and the conference small, but it was clear that financial institutions were kicking the tires.” ark-invest.com/research/block…
What I thought of then as the technology hitting “an inflection point in the financial services industry,” was really just an early wave of interest in the *ideas* from financial institutions.
Worth delineating now between:

1) an inflection of interest (ideas)

2) an inflection in implementation (creation)

3) an inflection in use (consumption)

Crypto has #1, is in the midst of building out #2, and #3 is mostly yet to come.
Anyway, thanks to @Sonnenshein and @GrayscaleInvest who gave me the free sponsor ticket to attend the conf, and also gave @ARKInvest an avenue to invest in $BTC 💪
A side note, I don’t think I ended up attending another conf where “#bitcoins” was more the norm than “#bitcoin” - is there history as to how that shift happened, or was it gradual osmosis through the interwebs?

Technology is not defensible in the open source world of #cryptonetworks.

Community is the defensible resource, and a *committed* community can't be bought.
It is proof-of-labor, not capital, that converts someone into being there over the long term, as opposed to a fairweather fan.
(And labor as a community member can show up in all kinds of ways, it's not exclusively technical-labor)

The more impact you have, the greater the incentive for the *next generation* to do the opposite of what has become the “new default.”
This is in part because we as social creatures flex on one another by doing new things— by being in the know.

We do this individually, as well as on a inter-generational basis.

Here's the cycle:

$BTC rallies hard, majority of "alts" drop as BTC is the main liquidity provider to #crypto (right now) and no one wants to sell BTC.

Value of "alts" in *BTC terms* then drops until whales choose to cycle into "alts." Then...
2/ Whales cycle from $BTC into the "alts" that're depressed (pick your alt).

Those "alts" rally harder than BTC did because they are higher risk, gaining in *BTC terms.*

The whales can then cash their "alts" out for more BTC than they started with. And so they "make BTC" :-)
3/ BTC is the market beta of #crypto.

Every other #cryptoasset is higher beta than it, meaning it'll move more to the downside (when people are panicking) and also more to the upside (when people are ebullient).

Four years ago today, I was laid off from what will likely be my last full-time job at a magazine. People sometimes ask for my advice on freelance writing, so here's what I got:
Try to keep around three anchor clients at all times, people who expect weekly or daily work from you. This stuff is typically the lowest-paying and least-interesting, but oh well. My first was five $50 stories a week for a women's mag.
One of my anchor clients typically folds or shuts down every few months. It's not fun, but at least you have the other two.

When you discover that you have an unruptured aneurysm in your brain, you want a doctor who is exceedingly skilled, and mine was (is!) — living in New York City with great insurance helped with this. But when we went to his office for the first meeting, I was unprepared for him.
I sat in the examination room, and he pulled the roll of paper over the long exam table, and drew me a picture of the most complicated kind of aneurysm there was and said simply, “that’s yours.” At which point, I looked at him and said, “Can you fix it?”

Four years ago today at this time I walked out of court.

I had been released on bail after being arrested for being suicidal. I was charged with breach of the peace and wasting police time, even though there was no one else in danger and no disruption to the public.
I had been so unwell in the court cells that the duty solicitor thought I wasn’t fit to plead, but it was ‘too late on’ to do anything about it. One of my bail conditions was that I ‘engage with social work’ before leaving court, but the social work office had closed for the day.
I didn’t have a social worker, and didn’t have any support or help from them or from mental health services throughout the duration of the prosecution (7 months). I was later told that in court the sheriff said they were minded to remand me as I seemed so at risk and had no help.

Four years ago today @fivefifths and I hatched the idea for seven scribes. We were policy people - Vann was working in healthcare at the time, and I worked in voting rights and criminal justice. At the time, the idea of being a professional writer was...impossible. Irrational.
Neither of us were married at the time. Neither of us had children. The world was a different place personally, but also generally. Our lives have changed so so drastically. It’s hard to imagine.
Anyway, now I get to do what I love with people I adore and Seven Scribes was one of the best things to ever happen to me. Shout out @eveewing and @quidditch424 and @SlimiHendrix and Frank.
