The amount of ignorance about antisemitism is astonishing. Antisemitism doesn’t work on a left vs right scale. Antisemite tend to prioritize their bigotry over everything else. That’s why David Duke has been constantly praising Ilhan Omar. That’s why he promotes that NYT cartoon.
It’s not because Duke suddenly isn’t racist or Islamophobic or doesn’t despite Omar’s views on immigration etc, but because he prioritizes his antisemitism above those things. He views her and her defenders as a good tool to normalize the same hatred he has always promoted.
That’s also why responsible people have to speak out against attempts to normalize antisemitism on both sides. Because at the end of the day, there isn’t much difference between them.
Are Ilhan Omar, the NYT, Linda Sasour responsible for yesterday’s attack? Of course not. The shooter is responsible. But it doesn’t help to pretend their antisemitism is somehow different or better than his.
Same goes with people on the right like Ted Nugent, Steve King etc.
