Exactly five years ago was the last night I spent at home. I was arrested and sent to prison the next morning, and ultimately taken from prison to the airport to be expelled from my country forever.
From this vantage point, five years later, It seems like another life entirely. Another history. That night was the nexus between two timelines: One ended, abruptly and permanently. Another began, reluctantly at first, but with a new energy.
Every year since, I've feared this date and it was the heaviest date on my calendar. I'd feel the weight weeks ahead and weeks later. This year, for the first time, I'm observing the date not with misery, but with pride, and a smile.
I know I'll never have a "normal" life, but then I don't want a normal life. I own this one. I built this one. I want this one.
Thanks to everyone who stuck with me before, during, and after. You know who you are. The only gratitude I can offer is a lifetime of service.
